Train driver reports person in distress
A train driver on the Dawlish to Teignmouth coastal rail route reported an adult male standing on rocks or a breakwater apparently waving a shirt to attract attention.
Brixham Coastguard launched a major search operation involving several shore-based Coastguard teams, the Portland search and rescue helicopter 'Whisky Bravo' and the Teignmouth RNLI lifeboat 'The Two Annes'.
The night was quite dark with no moonlight, a lumpy sea and a freshening wind with a 1m swell. The Teignmouth lifeboat searched the shoreside between Boat Cove Dawlish and the Parson & Clerk Rock, varying from 50 yards to 200 yards from the shore wherever the rocks allowed.
Parachute flares, night-sight glasses and search-lights were all used to search the area for over ninety minutes.
With nothing untoward found by any of the search teams and rescue services, the search was called off by the Coastguard at around 18:50 hours. |

Speed boat holed and beached at Ness Beach - possible tragedy averted
Brixham Coastguard requested the Teignmouth lifeboat to attend a beached 16ft Fletcher speedboat at Ness Beach. The speedboat, which had had one male and three females on board was full of water The Coastguard were concerned for the safety of the occupants should they attempt to refloat the vessel.
The lifeboat was initially unable to tow the casualty vessel due to the amount of water she had taken on, but after emptying it the vessel was towed to Gales Hill and put on its trailer.
The vessel owner said that had only recently purchased the speedboat, and that this was only his third or fourth venture to sea in it.
On recovering the boat it was noted that the vessels hull appeared in poor condition, and the lifeboat crew remarked that it was fortunate that the casualty had been close to the shore when they started taking on water, otherwise it could have been a tragedy if they had been further out to sea or on the bar.
The lifeboat station's launching authority James Trout remarked about the folly of non experienced sailors purchasing small boats without taking advice, and without talking to the RNLI Sea Safety team. |

Malicious call risks safety of lifeboat crew
A hoax call was made to Brixham Coastguard describing a small dinghy with two children on board in difficulties off Teignmouth Pier.
Teignmouth lifeboat 'The Two Annes' launched in response to this call during a Force 6-7 southerly gale with a swell varying 2-3 metres in height, and with poor visibility due to the rain and fading light.
The lifeboat carried out a fruitless search of the Teignmouth shoreline in difficult conditions. Helm Charlie Woolnough described the conditions as very poor and expressed his concern that this hoax call had put the safety of crew at risk. |

Sailing Cruiser adrift 3.7m off Teignmouth
Brixham Coastguard requested the launch of the Teignmouth lifeboat 'The Two Annes', to investigate a report from a passing fishing vessel - The Three Fevers - of a 16ft sailing cruiser adrift 3.7m miles east of the Parson & Clerk and with apparently nobody on board.
The crew found the cruiser 'Lotus' with its cabin padlock intact but having suffered extensive damage, possibly the result of a collision while on its mooring. There was no evidence of any person on board, or having been on board recently. The mast was buckled and in the water as were the sails and other rigging.
The crew then tidied up the cruiser and took it in tow to Teignmouth mooring her next to the Visitors Pontoon where HM Coastguard established that it was normally kept in Exmouth. The lifeboat then returned to her temporary mooring off Lifeboat Lane. The lifeboat is on a temporary mooring whilst new doors are fitted to the 140 year old lifeboat station. |

Speedboat in difficulties on the bar
The Teignmouth ILB was launched to assist a speedboat with 4 persons on board who had run out of fuel on the bar. The casualty vessel, a 5m speedboat was stern-on to the breaking waves caused by a strong ebb tide, and was taking on water.
As the lifeboat arrived on scene, the speedboat had partly refueled and restarted her engine. The boat occupants were unfamiliar with the entrance to Teignmouth, so three of the occupants were transferred to the lifeboat, and a crew member went aboard the casualty vessel and guided her to Polly Steps. |

Midnight Swimmer
Teignmouth RNLI's Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat, The Two Annes, was
launched just after midnight to reports of a man struggling in the
water. It's believed he'd swum out from the back of a pub on the
waters edge at River Beach. He was eventually pulled to safety by
visiting yachtsmen moored on a nearby pontoon.
The
man who was believed to be aged around forty, had managed to reach
the visitors pontoon in the river. People onboard the yachts
were woken and helped to get him out of the water. Fortunately one
of the visitors was a GP who then attended the casualty until the
lifeboat arrived to transfer him to the shore. The volunteer lifeboat
crew launched in a matter of minutes and were able to take the man
to a waiting ambulance, once he had been stabilised. |

Shortly after arriving back at the lifeboat station after providing a demonstration with the Exmouth ALB at the Dawlish Carnival, the Teignmouth life boat 'The Two Annes' was asked to attend a 21ft speedboat taking on water off Dawlish. The owner of the speed boat, with his family of three decided to beach his vessel prior to the arrival of the lifeboat.
On arrival at the casualty, crew member Pete Shillabeer went ashore with a tow-line, and together with the speedboat owner and some members of the local Coastguard the speedboat was re-floated.
The speedboat was then able to restart its engines and motored back to Gales Hill Teignmouth under its own power escorted by the lifeboat with crewman Pete Shillabeer on board, plus members of the Teignmouth Auxiliary Coastguard.
The speedboat owner then decided to continue his journey back to Brixham, but sent his family home by taxi.
It is understood that the remainder of the casualty's journey was uneventful. |

Search for mystery caller
Brixham Coastguard received a single 'Mayday' call at about 19:40hrs and were uncertain as to its origin, other than having an approximate bearing from Berry Head. Teignmouth lifeboat, which was already at sea as part of an exercise, Torbay and Exmouth all-weather lifeboats were all tasked to search the area between Berry Head up to and into the River Exe.
After successive sweeps by all the lifeboats for over an hour, and with no further calls being heard from the apparent casualty, nothing untoward was found, and the rescue services were stood down. |

Teenagers trapped on Sand Bank
2 teenagers were pulled from the sea by the Teignmouth lifeboat 'Frank & Dorothy'.
5 teenagers were spotted by a local resident waving frantically from the sandbank north of Spratt Sands Teignmouth. These sands, which are about 250m offshore increased in size during the winter easterly storms and are now easily visible above sea level. They are a natural magnet for children to attempt to play on.
Easily accessible at low water, the sands quickly become an island as the tide returns, and those caught on the sands are trapped as the water ebbs and flows between the sands and the beach in places in excess of 2m deep - worst still are the rip currents that will easily carry both a wader and a swimmer away from what seems safety and out to sea - these are going to be particularly strong at Spring Tides.
Just as dangerous is using an inflatable toy boat that will also be quickly carried away by both the currents and an offshore wind.
These children were lucky that they were spotted early - 3 of the five were collected by passing canoes, but the other two who tried to swim back to the shore were collected by the lifeboat and returned to the safety of the beach. |

Lifeboat 'stands by burning boat'
The local fire service requested the launch of the Teignmouth RNLI lifeboat 'Frank & Dorothy' to assist with a fire on a derelict and unattended boat at Luxton Steps on the Teign Estuary. The lifeboat 'stood-by' whilst the fire was put out by the Fire Service, and as access to Luxton Cove is difficult from the land-side, the lifeboat crew recovered various hoses and a pump to the lifeboat station for the Fire Service to collect later. |

Dayboat reported in difficulty in Labrador Bay
The Teignmouth NCI (National Coastwatch Institute) lookout reported a 20ft Dayboat apparently with a problem in Labrador Bay.
The Teignmouth RNLI lifeboat was launched to investigate and found the 20ft Dayboat with 2 persons on board.
Because of the state of the tide and the rough conditions on Teignmouth Bar, the boat owner had decided to wait in Labrador Bay. Lifeboat Helm Humphrey Vince, having assessed that there was no danger involved as they were waiting for more favourable tidal conditions, took details and returned to station. |

Boat owner makes a donation to the RNLI after his broken-down Motor Cruiser
is recovered
The 7 metre Motor-cruiser 'Maverick', with an in-board engine, suffered a hydraulic pipe fracture approx 4 miles north-east of Teignmouth. The weather conditions at the time were good visibility, a 1.5m swell and a wind of SW F5-6.
Brixham Coastguard requested the launch of the Teignmouth RNLI lifeboat 'Frank & Dorothy' who located the casualty with 2 persons on board, and took them in tow and then put the cruiser on a vacant mooring in Teignmouth - the lifeboat returning to station at 13:01 where hot drinks were provided to the boat owner and and his colleague.
The boat owner in appreciation of the service provided, made a kind donation to the Teignmouth RNLI lifeboat funds.
Whilst returning to Teignmouth with the 'Maverick' in tow, a drifting inflatable tender with no persons on board, was also recovered. The tender had apparently gone adrift whilst its owners were boarding another vessel. |

Swimmer reported in difficulties
Brixham Coastguard requested the launch of the Teignmouth RNLI Lifeboat 'Frank & Dorothy' to a report of a swimmer in difficulties near to Teignmouth Pier. A 2m swell and a NE wind F5-6 made searching very difficult
- the search was called off when a member of the public reported a man leaving the water unaided.
It was later reported that the the person in the water was a regular swimmer, however the Teignmouth Coastguard thought it prudent to advise the swimmer of the safety issues involved. |
