Main
features and benefits of the new design
The
Atlantic 85
will be fitted with a radar system which will aid search and
rescue operations, particularly in low visibility conditions.
The lifeboat
will also have VHF direction finding capability, meaning it will
be much easier to locate vessels in distress using the signal
from a standard VHF radio set. Greater speed will also be an
advantage
in a co-ordinated rescue operation.
The
design, construction methods and materials used in the new
lifeboat will mean much lower maintenance costs during the
lifetime of
each boat. The parts are modular, meaning they can be
replaced quickly and easily by being ‘bolted’ on
and off which will reduce the time needed to replace damaged
or broken parts and may mean that some repairs previously requiring
a return to ILC will be done locally.
There
will be more space on board, meaning the craft can accommodate
a fourth crew member – something Atlantic 75 crews have
been asking for. There is also more space for survivors, so that
those with injuries can be made more comfortable.
